The Latest News for All SkyMiles Members

Our SkyMiles Program changes for 2024 are now live including how SkyMiles Members will now earn toward 2025 Medallion Status, Delta Sky Club® access changes and more.

Learn more about these changes on our 2024 SkyMiles Program Changes page.

The SkyMiles Program will undergo several changes beginning January 1, 2023, as we hope to preserve the exclusivity and experience for our most loyal Members.

Here’s what we are changing:

  1.  We’re increasing Medallion Qualification Dollar (MQD) requirements to achieve 2024 Medallion Status for Diamond, Platinum, and Gold Members. Requirements for Silver Medallion Members will remain the same, and there are no changes to MQD waivers, Medallion Qualification Miles (MQM), or Medallion Qualification Segments (MQS) amounts.
  2.  Adding new premium Choice Benefits for our Diamond and Platinum Medallion Members – giving you more options for rewards that mean the most to you.
  3.  Enhancing the experience for our Diamond and Platinum Medallion Members who select Global and Regional Upgrade Certificates – allowing you to redeem your Upgrade Certificates with just a few clicks.
  4.  Giving you more options to pay with miles – now you can use the miles you’ve earned to cover checked bag fees.

SkyMiles Members will now benefit from two industry-leading program enhancements:

  1. Earning toward Medallion® Status on qualifying* Delta-marketed Award Travel is becoming a permanent benefit.
    • MQMs: You will earn MQMs on Award Travel tickets based on the distance flown
    • MQSs: You will earn MQSs like you normally would on retail tickets. Members earn 1 MQS for each segment of their journey
    • MQDs: MQDs on Award Tickets will be calculated based on the miles redeemed for the flight divided by 100
  2. Removing the mileage earn cap of 75,000 miles per ticket
    • This mileage cap removal includes any qualifying flights taken on or after January 1, 2022. If you already took a qualifying flight this year, we've got you covered and additional mileage will be credited to your SkyMiles account by April 1, 2022.

These enhancements are the latest in a series of investments we’ve made to elevate and advance the SkyMiles Program, and we will continue to make the SkyMiles Program more rewarding and easier to use to drive more value for our most loyal Members.

*Basic Economy tickets purchased on or after December 9, 2021 for flights departing on or after January 1, 2022, are not eligible to earn miles in the SkyMiles Program or earn credit towards Medallion Status (meaning not eligible for MQM, MQS or MQD earn). Award Travel on flights operated by Delta partners are excluded.

Update:

As of January 10, 2022, all MQMs have rolled over giving all SkyMiles® Members an even bigger jumpstart on earning 2023 Medallion Status.

December 15, 2021:

Exclusive to Delta and special for this year, all SkyMiles® Members, whether or not you have Medallion® Status, will rollover all Medallion Qualification Miles (MQMs) you have in your account at the end of 2021 – giving you an even bigger jumpstart on earning 2023 Medallion Status.

2021 Rollover MQMs will begin posting in your account on January 2, 2022 and will be complete by approximately January 31, 2022.

MQMs can be earned on flights flown with Delta and our airline partners or through spend on your eligible Delta SkyMiles American Express Card. Learn more about MQMs here. Terms apply.

Basic Economy tickets purchased on or after December 9, 2021 for flights departing on or after January 1, 2022, will no longer be eligible to earn miles in the SkyMiles Program or earn towards Medallion Status (meaning not eligible for MQM, MQS or MQD earn).

Additionally, Delta is introducing a new policy to offer more flexibility for customers with a Basic Economy ticket. Customers who redeem their miles for a Basic Economy ticket departing on or after January 1, 2022 can now cancel their ticket and receive a portion of their miles back, following a cancellation charge that is deducted from their ticket value. Visit our Travel Planning Center to learn more.

It’s recommended to purchase a Main Cabin ticket or higher for customers who value greater flexibility, advanced seat selection, overhead bin space, no change fees, and the continued ability to earn miles in the SkyMiles Program and earn towards Medallion Status.

1/11/21 UPDATE: Rollover MQMs completed processing on January 11, 2021.

Knowing that COVID-19 has impacted travel for many of our Card Members, we are providing more value and flexibility to help you reach 2022 Medallion® Status whether you are at home or on the go.

Delta SkyMiles American Express Card Members can reach Medallion Status faster with a special offer in 2021.

With Status Boost, Platinum and Reserve Card Members can earn 25% more Medallion Qualification Miles (MQMs) for each spending threshold they meet. That means that in 2021, Reserve Card Members can earn 18,750 MQMs each time they spend $30,000 on purchases (up to 4 times) instead of the 15,000 MQMs they would normally earn, and Platinum Card Members can earn 12,500 MQMs each time they spend $25,000 on purchases (up to 2 times) instead of the 10,000 MQMs they would normally earn with Status Boost in a calendar year.

This is in addition to the news from earlier this year that:

  • We extended 2020 Medallion Status through the 2021 Medallion year so you can keep enjoying your current Status through January 31, 2022
  • All 2020 MQMs will be rolled over to 2021 so all SkyMiles Members have a head start on earning 2022 Medallion Status

All of these updates happen automatically – you don’t need to sign up or enroll.

Offers are available from 1/1/21 - 12/31/21. Terms apply.

As SkyMiles Members consider travel in 2021 and beyond, you can look forward to more choice and control over managing your plans as Delta is expanding on its customer-first flexibility promise by permanently eliminating change fees for international travel originating from North America, effective immediately.

SkyMiles Members can now expect:

  • No Award ticket redeposit or reissue fees for travel originating from North America to anywhere in the world (including flights operated by joint venture and codeshare partners), with the exception of Basic Economy tickets.
  • Changes and cancellations of Award tickets within 72 hours of departure will no longer result in the loss of miles.

This follows Delta’s previous announcement of the elimination of change fees for travel within the U.S., Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands, excluding Basic Economy fares.

SkyMiles Members can also take advantage of no change fees for all tickets purchased through March 30, 2021, for both domestic and international travel – regardless of the type of ticket booked or travel destination. Members can also use their travel credits through December 2022 for travel originally scheduled to depart before March 31, 2021 (if the ticket was purchased before April 17, 2020).

As we look towards 2021, we want our Members to feel more in control when booking their Award Travel with no change fees and more flexibility as a permanent Delta pledge.

SkyMiles Members can now enjoy greater flexibility and peace of mind when traveling on an Award ticket with the ability to change their plans at any time.

The following changes are effective immediately for Award tickets for travel within the U.S. (including Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands), excluding Basic Economy fares:

  • Award ticket redeposit and reissue fees have been eliminated
  • Members may change or cancel Award tickets before departure. No longer will changes and cancellations made within 72 hours of departure result in the loss of miles.

Now more than ever, we want our Members to feel confident when booking Award Travel as they consider their travel plans.

As previously announced, SkyMiles Members can already take advantage of no change fees for all tickets purchased through Dec. 31, 2020, for both domestic and international travel. Members can also use their travel credits through December 2022 for travel originally scheduled to depart before March 31, 2021 (if the ticket was purchased before April 17, 2020).

We are adding new offers to eligible Delta SkyMiles® Reserve, Platinum, and Gold American Express Cards to help you get more value out of your every day, no matter if you’re staying at home or planning your next escape.

  • With the new offers, eligible Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card Members can enroll and earn 4X miles at restaurants – including takeout and delivery – and 5X miles on Delta purchases after using their Delta SkyMiles® Gold Card until 12/31/20; that’s 2 miles per dollar on top of what they already earn for restaurants and 3 miles per dollar on top of what they already earn on Delta purchases.1

SkyMiles Members flying with China Southern will continue earning miles only on the following flights:

  • China Southern-marketed/China Southern-operated
  • Delta-marketed/China Southern-operated
  • China Southern-marketed/Delta-operated

These changes are due to China Southern’s exit from the SkyTeam Airline Alliance, opens in a new window on January 1, 2019. China Southern will continue to be a Delta Global Airline Partner and Medallion Member’s benefits on China Southern will not change.

Learn more about how to earn miles on China Southern and our other partner airlines.

1 How do I know if a flight is marketed or operated by Delta or a partner?

  • The marketing carrier is determined by the two letter airline code in the flight number. For example, DL2368 is marketed by Delta and CZ238 is marketed by China Southern.
  • The operating carrier for a flight indicates which airline flies the plane. For example, a China Southern-operated flight means the flight will be on a China Southern aircraft.

Through February 29th, 2020, eligible Members that are close to achieving Diamond, Platinum, Gold or Silver Medallion Status for the 2020 Medallion Year can reach that next Medallion Tier by participating in Elevate Your Status.

Elevate Your Status allows Members to purchase a bundle of Medallion Qualification Miles (MQMs), Medallion Qualification Segments (MQSs) and Medallion Qualification Dollars (MQDs – U.S.-based Members only) in order to achieve the next Tier of Medallion Status.

All Tiers of Medallion Status include:

How Elevate Your Status works:

  • Members should know their current MQM, MQS and MQD balance before purchasing a bundle. If you need to check your balance, go to My SkyMiles or the SkyMiles section of the Fly Delta app.
  • Eligible Members can visit delta.com/elevateyourstatus and log in to participate.
  • Click “Purchase Now” to go through the easy steps to complete your transaction.
  • Once you’ve completed your transaction, the MQMs, MQSs and MQDs will be added to your 2019 balance and apply towards your 2020 Medallion Status within 24 hours. Please be sure to select a bundle that gives you enough MQMs, MQSs and MQDs to reach the next Tier of Status.

Who is eligible:

  • All Platinum, Gold and Silver Medallion Members are eligible for Elevate Your Status, unless they received complimentary Status for a Tier above the Tier they earned Status for. For example, if a Member is given complimentary Gold Medallion Status, but earned Silver Medallion Status through the published requirements, he or she is ineligible for Elevate Your Status.
  • General SkyMiles Members must be within range to reach Silver Medallion Status by purchasing the maximum bundle of MQMs, MQSs and MQDs, in order to be eligible to participate. For example, if a Member only has 12,000 MQMs, he or she will not be eligible because the maximum amount of MQMs that can be earned through Elevate Your Status is 12,500 and the MQMs requirement for Silver Medallion Status is 25,000.
  • As a reminder, Diamond Medallion Members are ineligible for Elevate Your Status because Diamond Medallion Members have already reached the highest Tier of Medallion Status.

If you still have travel planned for 2019 and you’re not sure which bundle of MQMs/MQSs you might need, don’t worry! This offer lasts until February 29, 2020, so you can wait to purchase your bundle until you know your 2019 balance.

Have additional questions about Elevate Your Status? Visit our Elevate Your Status FAQs page to learn more.

2Companions of the Certificate holder must be traveling on the same or linked reservation as the Certificate holder. Each companion will require their own Certificate to be upgraded, but there is no limit on the number of companions the Certificate holder can have.

Last year, we extended your 2020 Medallion Status through January 31, 2022 to ensure your benefits are available when you are ready to travel again. Due to the impacts of the pandemic, if you received this Status extension and did not earn 2021 Medallion Status through qualifying flight and spend activity, we won’t be sending a new Medallion Welcome Kit or set of bag tags.

Rest assured, you can continue to use your 2020 bag tags as no design or material changes are being made to Medallion bag tags this year, and the tags you already have on hand remain the latest and greatest. As always, you can still access your 2021 digital membership card at any time in the Fly Delta app.

Those that earned 2021 Medallion Status through the required flight and spend activity were sent Welcome Kits upon earning that Status. Additionally, all Members that earn 2022 Medallion Status through the published requirements throughout 2021 will receive a Welcome Kit upon earning, as you normally would.

We thank you for understanding and for your continued loyalty. We look forward to welcoming you onboard soon.

2020 Diamond and Platinum Medallion Members must select their 2020 Choice Benefits by January 31, 2021. While all 2020 Medallion Status was extended through January 31, 2022, all 2020 Choice Benefits selections will expire at the end of the 2020 Medallion Year – on January 31, 2021.

Through the Status extension, Diamond and Platinum Medallion Members can select new 2021 Choice Benefits beginning February 1, 2021.

Choice Benefits allow our most loyal Members to experience the Medallion difference by customizing their benefits to best fit their travel needs. Choice Benefit options include:

  • Global and/or Regional Upgrade Certificates
  • Bonus miles for yourself, another SkyMiles Member, or a SkyWish charity of your choice
  • $200 Delta travel voucher or $200 Tiffany & Co. gift card
  • Gifting Medallion Status
  • Delta Sky Club® Membership options (Diamond Medallion Members only)

Please note, while Gifted Medallion Status selected as a 2020 Choice Benefit would normally expire at the end of the Medallion Year – on January 31, 2021 – the policy works different this year due to the 2020 Medallion Status Extension. Any gifted Gold or Silver Medallion Status selected as a 2020 Choice Benefit will expire January 31, 2022.

As a reminder, all Delta Sky Club Membership options are valid only through January 31, 2021.

On June 10, we will be reinstating advanced, automatic Medallion® Complimentary Upgrades for Delta One® (within the U.S. 50), First Class and Delta Comfort+®, which were previously temporarily being managed at the gate.

Medallion Members will be cleared for Complimentary Upgrades based on their designated clearance window in priority order  based on availability and other measures – like blocking middle seats and capping seats in every cabin  – we have implemented to make space for safer travel onboard to ensure the safety of our customers and employees.

Now more than ever, we appreciate your loyalty and for continuing to trust us with your travel. Know that our commitment remains to keeping you, and our crew, safe.

Learn more about how Delta is making space onboard .

As a Medallion® Member, your health and safety are our highest priority. That is why we are temporarily pausing automatic, advance Medallion Complimentary Upgrades beginning Monday, April 13th through June 30th, 2020. During this time, Complimentary Upgrades will still be processed at the gate in priority order. That way, gate agents can determine how to best seat customers while considering social distancing and aircraft weight and balance restrictions.

Additionally, our boarding process has been temporarily modified and you will be invited to board by row, starting from the rear of the aircraft forward. If you are seated in Delta One® or First Class or you are a Diamond Medallion Member, you are welcome to board at any point during the temporary boarding process change.

Here’s important things to know about these temporary changes:

  • Both of these temporary changes are currently planned to run until June 30, 2020. At that time, we’ll evaluate if an extension is needed based on the current environment.
  • This applies to Complimentary Upgrades to Delta Comfort+, First Class, and US domestic Delta One. As a reminder, there are no Complimentary Upgrades to Delta Premium Select or international Delta One.
  • Medallion Members will also not be able to select Complimentary Upgrades themselves in the seat map. Upgrades will only be processed by gate agents prior to boarding based on availability and the temporary changes we have implemented to make space for safer travel.
  • While the temporary Complementary Upgrade policy is active, Diamond and Platinum Medallion Members booking flights that depart after June 30, 2020 will not have the ability to immediately upgrade into Delta Comfort+ shortly after booking. Once the social distancing policy has ended and automatic Complimentary Upgrades are reinstated, all Members that were eligible for immediate Delta Comfort+ Complimentary Upgrades for future flights will be cleared in priority order, subject to availability.
  • The temporary Complimentary Upgrade change does not impact Upgrade Certificates. Global and Regional Upgrade Certificates, available to Medallion Members through Choice Benefits, will still be processed as they normally are. Waitlisted Global and Regional Upgrade Certificates will still be cleared at a higher priority than Complimentary Upgrades at the gate. View more on the clearance process for Upgrade Certificates here, opens in a new window.
  • Nothing is changing with the Preferred Seats policy at this time. Preferred Seats may still be selected by Medallion Members at booking, subject to availability.

Now more than ever, we appreciate your loyalty and for continuing to trust us with your travel. Thank you for your understanding, and know that our commitment remains to keeping you, and our crew, safe.

2019 Rollover Medallion Qualification Miles (MQMs) will begin posting on January 6, 2020 and will be complete by approximately January 10th. For any questions or concerns around your 2019 Rollover MQMs, please reach out to your designated Medallion phone line.

You asked, and we listened. As a Medallion Member opted in1, Go to footer note to Delta Comfort+ Complimentary Upgrades, you can now select your Delta Comfort+ Seat Preferences on delta.com or the Fly Delta app for an upcoming flight.

If you are traveling by yourself and you haven’t already been cleared to Delta Comfort+ in your designated clearance window2, here’s how to select your Delta Comfort+ Complimentary Upgrade Seat Preferences on an upcoming flight:

  1. Find your reservation in My Trips at delta.com or in the Fly Delta app (make sure you’ve downloaded the latest version of the Fly Delta app).
  2. Request a Delta Comfort+ Upgrade and check the “Upgrade Preferences” box.
  3. Then, check both boxes for “Request upgrade” and “Only upgrade if my Seat Preferences are available.”
  4. Select your Preferences: aisle, middle or window.
  5. If you have multiple segments in your trip, click “Apply to All Segments of the Trip" to save your Seat Preferences for each segment.
  6. Confirm your Seat Preferences. Once your Preferences are set, you will be upgraded to Delta Comfort+ for your upcoming flight if your selected Seat Preferences are available.3, Go to footer note

For now, the new Seat Preferences are only available when you are traveling alone on a Delta-operated flight (a flight on a Delta aircraft). In addition, Seat Preferences cannot be updated or changed once checked-in for a flight.

Be on the lookout for future updates as we are continuously working on improvements to create a better upgrade experience for our Medallion Members!

1. If you’ve never set Upgrade Preferences in your SkyMiles profile before, your settings default to being opted out of automatic upgrades to Delta Comfort+, so make sure you are opted in to enjoy Complimentary Upgrades. Selecting your Delta Comfort+ Seat Preferences won’t change your global settings, and you’ll need to select your Delta Comfort+ Preferences every time you fly.
2. If your upgrade doesn’t clear right away once you are within your designated upgrade clearance window but seats are showing as available in the seat map, you can self-select your upgrade by visiting the seat map and choosing an open seat.
3. While our gate agents do their best to take set Seat Preferences into consideration, in some cases, manual upgrades made by a Delta gate agent may override Seat Preferences within 3 hours prior to the Member’s flight departure.

Upgrade Certificates, which are available exclusively for Diamond and Platinum Medallion Members as a Choice Benefit, may now be used to upgrade on flights that are booked as a part of a Delta Vacations® package.

Go beyond the flight with Delta Vacations and create your ideal getaway including flight, hotel, car rental and more to over 300 destinations. Plus, you can take advantage of an exclusive offer for Medallion Members and save up to $300 on your next booking.

Effective September 16, 2019, Diamond Medallion Members can now use a Global Upgrade Certificate to upgrade into First Class on Delta-marketed1, Korean Air-operated flights if the original ticket purchased was in Korean Air’s Prestige Class, opens in a new window (J fare class).

This new feature is in addition to Diamond Medallion Members’ current ability to use a Global Upgrade Certificate to upgrade into Korean Air’s Prestige Class if the original ticket purchased was in Korean Air’s Economy Class, opens in a new window (Y, B and M fare class).*

Medallion Members must contact Delta reservations directly to apply Upgrade Certificates and Certificates on Korean Air must be confirmed at least 24 hours prior to departure. Certificates cannot be used to waitlist for a Korean Air flight and upgrades are subject to availability.

1 How do I know if a flight is marketed, operated, or ticketed by Delta or a partner?

  • The marketing carrier is determined by the two letter airline code in the flight number. For example, DL2368 is marketed by Delta and KE238 is marketed by Korean Air.
  • Delta-ticketed flights feature ticket numbers that begin with 006. Any flight purchased through delta.com is ticketed by Delta. Other airlines have their own unique ticket numbers. For example, Korean Air-ticketed flights feature ticket numbers that begin with 180.
  • The operating carrier for a flight indicates which airline flies the plane. For example, a Korean Air-operated flight means the flight will be on a Korean Air aircraft.

*Please note if you purchase an Economy Class ticket, you will not be able to use two Global Upgrade Certificates to be upgraded into First Class and a Korean Air Prestige Class ticket must be purchased in order to use a Global Upgrade Certificate into Korean Air’s First Class.

  • We’ve gone digital! With your membership card at your fingertips 24/7 in the Fly Delta app, Diamond and Platinum welcome kits will no longer include a physical membership card. In addition to the Fly Delta app, you can also print a card from My SkyMiles at delta.com anytime.

Beginning this January, boarding groups for Delta flights worldwide will be renamed to reflect the fare purchased. Medallion Members will continue to board in the same groups they do today and will see the new group names reflected on their boarding passes and at the gate.

  • Diamond Medallion Members will receive highest priority boarding in Delta One®/ First Class & Diamond, formerly "Premium"
  • Platinum and Gold Medallion Members will still board with Sky Priority®
  • Silver Medallion Members will still board with Priority Boarding in Main Cabin 1, formerly Zone 1

Delta Comfort+® will now be its own boarding group and will board before Sky Priority. This means that Platinum and Gold Medallion Members seated in the Main Cabin will now board after Delta Comfort+. Medallion Members will continue to receive Unlimited Complimentary Upgrades as a benefit, so if they purchase a Main Cabin fare and are upgraded to different cabin or purchase an upgraded fare, they will board accordingly with that zone.

Due to technology updates that will temporarily impact specific Delta aircraft, Medallion Members that book a Main Cabin ticket on the below routes will need to manually select their Complimentary Upgrade to Delta Comfort+ (if available) in the seat map during their normal clearance window.

Starting today, Medallion Members who have already purchased a ticket on a Delta-marketed, Aeromexico-operated flight will be able to select their complimentary preferred seats on delta.com or in the Fly Delta app and no longer need to call Aeromexico to receive the seats for free. Preferred seats on Aeromexico include window or aisle main cabin seats closer to the front of the plane and all exit rows. Don’t forget, as a Medallion Member you are also eligible for Complimentary Upgrades on Aeromexico-operated flights, giving you different ways to enjoy comfortable seats during your trips with Aeromexico.

Reminder: a Delta-marketed, Aeromexico-operated flight means that the flight will have “DL” as the airline code in the flight number (for example DL2368) but will be on an Aeromexico aircraft.

Starting November 15, 2018, Silver Medallion Members are now eligible to receive a free checked bag when traveling on all Virgin Atlantic-operated* flights. This benefit includes a waived fee for one extra bag over the standard allowance on Virgin Atlantic-operated flights, regardless of the cabin you’re traveling in.

As a Medallion Member, you spend a lot of time with Delta employees, and we want to recognize the employees that go above and beyond to make your travel experience exceptional.

Email your stories to MedallionThanks@delta.com with as much detail as possible so we can identify the employee who helped make your day. If you know their name that is really helpful, but also who were they? A gate agent at the JFK airport? A flight attendant on your trip from LAX to ATL? A phone representative? The more information you can share, the better.

If you have stories from the past, we’re eager to hear those too. Please send us any of the details you can remember.

Besides helping recognize employees, some of the best stories might be featured in Delta marketing! Before anything you’ve shared with us is made public, we’ll be sure to contact you via email for your permission.

2017 was an amazing year for Medallion Members. Take a look at the 2017 Medallion life, opens in a new window, and we look forward to seeing what our Members accomplish in 2018.

Starting January 22, 2018, Upgrade Certificates, which are available exclusively for Diamond and Platinum Medallion Members as a Choice Benefit, may now be used to upgrade on Pay with Miles tickets and SkyMiles Companion Certificates in addition to regular retail tickets.

Additionally, Certificate owners can now use an Upgrade Certificate on a companion without having to use one for themselves. So when two SkyMiles Members (one of which has Upgrade Certificates in their account) are traveling together on the same flight—whether in the same reservation or a linked reservation—an Upgrade Certificate can now be used for just one Member*. For example:

  • Previously, if a Member was flying to Europe for business in Delta One, and had a companion traveling on the same flight, he/she would not have been able to use an Upgrade Certificate to upgrade the companion to Delta One.
  • Now, in the same scenario, the Member will be able to use one Upgrade Certificate to upgrade his/her companion to Delta One as long as the companion is a SkyMiles Member.

Visit Upgrade Certificates to learn more.

* When upgrading on SkyMiles Companion Certificates, two Upgrade Certificates will be required to upgrade as the primary ticket holder and the companion must always travel in the same cabin.

2017 Diamond and Platinum Medallion Members must select their 2017 Choice Benefits by January 31, 2018. Choice Benefits allow our most loyal Members to customize their benefits to best fit their travel needs. Benefits include:
