Get to Know Medallion Status

Reclaim My Status

Sometimes a big life event can impact your ability to travel. And when life happens, we want to be there for our Medallion Members. Reclaim My Status, a Medallion Benefit inspired by our Members, is here to help you return to Status if life slows down your travel.

How Does Reclaim My Status Work?

1. Life slows down your travel

Something happens that impacts your ability to travel, and you either lose Status or move to a lower Medallion Tier. This includes things like becoming a new parent, changing jobs, going back to school, experiencing a medical issue, needing to take care of a friend or family member or another life event-we’re here to listen.

Unfortunately, COVID-19 will not be accepted as a reasoning for Reclaiming Status if you benefited from our Status extensions in 2021 and 2022.

2. Reach out when you’re ready

When you’re ready to start traveling again, submit your request to get your Medallion Status back. You must meet both of the following basic requirements to be considered:

  • You had EARNED Medallion Status during the previous Medallion year, but either lost it completely or moved to a lower Tier of Status
  • You have documentation to verify a life event occurred which reduced your ability to travel (all life events will be considered)

If you have already lost your Status or moved to a lower Tier, please make sure that you’re ready to start traveling again before you submit your request.

If you have not yet lost your Status or moved to a lower Tier but anticipate losing it due a life event you are currently experiencing, you must wait to submit your request until your Status changes.

Your three-month complimentary status period will begin as soon as you receive the email stating your request has been approved. Reviews of requests may come with a delay at this time, but please know we are doing everything we can to get back to you as soon as possible.

3. Travel with complimentary Status for three months

If your request is approved, you will receive an email letting you know you have been enrolled in Reclaim My Status and returned to Diamond, Platinum, Gold or Silver Medallion Status based on the Medallion Status you enjoyed the previous Medallion Year. This complimentary Status will last for three months beginning on the date your request is approved.

If your request is not approved, you’ll receive an email notifying you of Delta’s decision.

4. Earn back your Status through January 31, 2025

To extend your Status beyond the complimentary three months, meet the minimum travel and spend thresholds for your Status Tier during the three-month period. Once you meet the thresholds, keep your Status for this Medallion Year plus the following Medallion Year (until January 31, 2025).

  • Earn the required amount of Medallion Qualification Miles (MQMs) or Medallion Qualification Segments (MQSs) and for U.S.-based Members only, earn the required amount of Medallion Qualification Dollars (MQDs) or qualify for the MQD Waiver*

Frequently Asked Questions

What supporting documentation do I need to provide in my application?

The supporting documentation should be proof that your life event occurred. For example, if you left your job to continue your education and are now expecting to travel more as you re-enter the workforce, documents proving you were recently in school and are now starting a new job could be submitted as supporting documentation. Please avoid including your protected health information in your documentation.

Can I use COVID-19 as reason for Reclaiming My Status?

Unfortunately, COVID-19 will not be accepted as a reasoning for Reclaiming Status if you benefited from our Status extensions in 2021 and 2022.

On what flights can I earn MQMs, MQSs or MQDs that will apply to Reclaim My Status?

MQMs, MQSs and MQDs earned on Delta- and Delta Connection-operated flights in Main Cabin or above* will count. MQMs, MQSs and MQDs may also be earned on eligible partner airline flights that are eligible to earn MQMs, MQSs and MQDs. Visit Earning With Airline Partners to learn more about what flights qualify. MQMs, MQSs and MQDs earned through other sources, including but not limited to Delta SkyMiles American Express Cards, do not count.

*Basic Economy tickets are not eligible for earning miles in the SkyMiles® Program or earning credit towards Medallion Status.

Which Medallion Tiers are eligible for the Reclaim My Status benefit?

You can enroll in Reclaim My Status for Diamond, Platinum, Gold or Silver Medallion Status. The invitation-only Delta 360° Program is not eligible for Reclaim My Status.

How long after I am approved to enroll in Reclaim My Status will my three-month complimentary Status go into effect?

Your three-month complimentary Medallion Status period will begin immediately when you receive the email that states request has been approved. Reviews of requests may come with a delay at this time, but please know we are doing everything we can to get back to you as soon as possible.

Remember to wait until you are ready to start flying again to apply for Reclaim My Status, as your three-month complimentary offer period cannot be deferred.

If my application is denied, can I re-apply in the future?

Yes, as long as you’re applying for a life event other than the event shared in your previously denied application.

Can I still enroll in if I did not have Medallion Status in the previous Medallion Year?

While the benefit is designed for Members that lost their Status in the previous Medallion Year, we will make exceptions on a case-by-case basis for life events that might have kept a Member from traveling for longer than one year. For example, if you returned to school to earn a multiple-year degree. If you believe your situation needs an exception, please let us know in the free response section of the enrollment form.

Will my Medallion Status be updated in my account during the complimentary three months?

Yes, your SkyMiles account will show your new Status in all channels (delta.com, Fly Delta app, boarding pass, etc.).

Will I be notified if I meet the thresholds?

If you meet the thresholds, you will be notified via email, and your newly-earned Medallion Status will be reflected in your account. If you do not meet the thresholds, your account will revert back to your earned SkyMiles Status. Please note reviews of requests may come with a delay at this time, but please know we are doing everything we can to get back to you as soon as possible.

Will I receive a Medallion welcome kit in the mail?

Your digital membership card can be found in the My Wallet section of the Fly Delta app and the My SkyMiles section of delta.com. A physical welcome kit will not be issued for the three-month complimentary Status. Members who meet the thresholds  will receive a welcome kit in the mail within three weeks after the 3-month offer period has ended.

Will I be eligible to select Choice Benefits?

Members who receive three months of complimentary Diamond or Platinum Medallion Status will not be eligible to select Choice Benefits if they do not meet the thresholds to extend Status beyond the complimentary 3-month period.

If you meet the thresholds to earn Diamond or Platinum Medallion Status, you will then be eligible to select Choice Benefits for the following year. For example: If you are enrolled in Reclaim My Status on June 1, 2022 and earn Platinum Medallion Status through Reclaim My Status on August 15, 2022, you will earn Platinum Medallion Status until January 31, 2024 You are then eligible to select 2023 Choice Benefits (which you have until January 31, 2024 to select, but you can choose to select them immediately). Learn more about Choice Benefits.

Can I earn a different Medallion Status than I earned last year?

Through Reclaim My Status, you cannot earn a Medallion Status higher than what you earned in the previous Medallion year; you can only earn a Medallion Status equal to or lower than the Medallion Status you earned in the previous Medallion year.

For example, if you previously had Platinum Medallion Status, and during your complimentary three months of Platinum Medallion Status, you actually meet the thresholds for Diamond Medallion Status, you will still only extend your Platinum Medallion Status for that year and the following year. As another example, if you previously had Gold Medallion Status, and at the end of your complimentary three months of Gold Medallion Status, you have only met the thresholds for Silver Medallion Status, you will be given Silver Medallion Status for that year and the following year.

Keep in mind, you are still eligible to reach a higher Tier of Medallion Status through the published qualification thresholds.

Will I receive Rollover MQMs if I meet the thresholds?

If you successfully complete Reclaim My Status, you are eligible for Rollover MQMs based on your earned Medallion Status (but only for the MQMs earned above the published annual Medallion Status qualification threshold).

For example: You complete Reclaim My Status for Silver Medallion Status by earning 6,250 MQMs and $750 MQDs within the three-month period. During the remainder of that same calendar year, you earn an additional 20,000 MQMs and $2,250 MQDs, which means you’ve earned 26,250 MQMs and $3,000 MQDs for the calendar year. Your Rollover MQMs, received in January of the next calendar year, would be 1,250 MQMs - your total earned MQMs (26,250 MQMs) minus the published threshold for Silver Medallion Status (25,000 MQMs).

How often can I participate?

You can participate in Reclaim My Status once every three years, but if your situation needs an exception please let us know. For example, if you’ve gone on maternity leave multiple times within the last three years.

How will Delta ensure this new Medallion Benefit is only being used by qualified Members?

We have put rules and reviews in place to ensure that only Medallion Members who should be enrolled are accepted. And remember, the spend and travel requirements to maintain Status beyond the 3-month complimentary period are aligned with the standard requirements a Member must meet to earn each Tier of Status in the calendar year. Only Members that fly like Platinum Medallion Members in their 3-month complimentary period, for example, will successfully be able to reclaim their Platinum Status beyond those 3 months.

What if my reason for applying is not listed under potential life events?

You should go ahead submit your request for review. We understand life happens and are open to hearing your story. Unforeseen circumstances outside of a Member’s control that may not be categorized as a ‘life event’ will also be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

What if I lost my Medallion Status because I was serving in the military?

There is an existing, separate policy for Members who did not re-qualify for their Medallion Status because they were serving in the military.

Members of the United States Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard who were not able to use their Medallion Status or did not requalify for Medallion Status as a result of their deployment are eligible for a Medallion Status extension. Upon return from deployment, military members are eligible to extend their Medallion Status for the remainder of the current Medallion Year, plus the following Medallion Year upon providing a copy of their deployment orders. For example, if the extension is granted before December 31, 2022, your Medallion Status will be extended through January 31, 2024. If the extension is granted between January 1, 2022 and December 31, 2022, your Medallion Status will be extended through January 31, 2024.

The Medallion Status request can be submitted once the military member returns home from deployment. Requests may not be made before or during deployment.

Any deployment will qualify, regardless of length, as long as it takes place during the time the Member has Medallion Status. Members do not currently need to be on active duty to request an exception. Reserve members are eligible.

While the existing policy remains unchanged, we want those who served to be able to take advantage of this easier-to-navigate way of submitting a request.

To submit a request:

  1. Fill out this form
  2. In the "Reason for Losing Status" field, select “Other”
  3. In the open response field, please indicate you lost your Medallion Status due to military service
  4. Attach your deployment orders to the form
  5. Select "Submit Your Request"

Requests will typically be reviewed and processed within five business days, but please allow up to two weeks. Upon approval of your request, you will see your updated Medallion Status reflected in your account on the My SkyMiles page or in the SkyMiles section of the Fly Delta app. You will be notified of your approval through the e-mail address in your SkyMiles account, so please make sure yours is up-to-date in My Profile.

This offer is not transferable and eligibility/qualification for the offer is at the sole discretion of Delta Air Lines. Valid documentation and proof of incident is required and subject to approval. In addition to life events listed on the Reclaim My Status page, Delta Air Lines will evaluate all requests based on unforeseen circumstances outside a Member’s control that caused a change in Medallion Status. Offer valid for travel completed within 3 calendar months from the date you are notified of enrollment in Reclaim My Status (" Offer Period"). For example, if you are enrolled on June 30, 2023, only flights departing between June 30, 2023 and September 30, 2023 (at 11:59:59pm US Central Standard Time) will be credited towards the requirements. If accepted, you may only enroll in this offer once every three (3) years.

Complimentary Medallion Status during the Offer Period is effective the day after enrollment notification and will be valid for 3 calendar months. If you successfully fly the required amount of Medallion Qualification Miles (MQMs) or Medallion Qualification Segments (MQSs), and (for U.S.-based Members only) earn the required amount of MQDs or qualify for the MQD Waiver* during the  Offer Period, you will retain the applicable level of Medallion Status through January 31, 2025.

MQMs, MQSs and MQDs earned through travel on Delta, Delta Connection, and SkyMiles Partner Airlines will count towards Reclaim My Status. MQMs/MQSs/MQDs earned through other sources (such as MQMs earned through the Miles Boost benefit with your Delta SkyMiles American Express Card), do not count towards Reclaim My Status.

*The MQDs requirement will be waived if you achieve the MQD Waiver. The MQD Waiver can be earned for Platinum, Gold or Silver Medallion Status for Reclaim My Status if you make $25,000 or more in eligible purchases with your eligible Delta SkyMiles American Express Card. The MQD Waiver can be earned for Diamond Medallion Status for Reclaim My Status if you make $250,000 or more in eligible purchases with your eligible Delta SkyMiles American Express Card. The timing for achieving the MQD Waiver for Reclaim My Status is as follows:

If your three-month Offer Period begins and ends in the same calendar year (for example, begins on August 1, 2023 and ends on November 1, 2023), you must achieve the MQD Waiver between January 1 of that calendar year and the end of your Offer Period. In this example, you would have from January 1, 2023 through November 1, 2023 to achieve the MQD Waiver.

If your Offer Period falls between two calendar years (for example, begins on November 1, 2023 and ends on February 1, 2024, you can reach the MQD Waiver through either of the following two options:

  • Option 1: the MQD Waiver will apply if you earn it at any time during the first calendar year. In this example, you would have from January 1, 2023 through December 31, 2023 to achieve the MQD Waiver
  • Option 2: the MQD Waiver will apply if you earn it between the beginning of the second calendar year and the end of your Offer Period. In this example, you would have from January 1, 2023 through February 1, 2024 to achieve the MQD Waiver.

Meeting either of the two options listed waives the MQD requirement for Reclaim My Status. You cannot combine your MQD Waiver spend between the two years. Remember, your MQD Waiver spend resets on January 1 each calendar year, and is not combined with any of your MQD Waiver spend from the previous year.

Medallion Status must be earned in subsequent years through the published qualification thresholds.

Members who successfully complete Reclaim My Status to keep Medallion Status through January 31, 2025 will have their account updated in the system within 7 business days of completion of the requirements.

Members who successfully complete Reclaim My Status for 2024 Medallion Status may be eligible for Rollover MQMs based on their earned Medallion Status (but only for MQMs above the published Medallion Status qualification threshold).
