Founded in the 17th century by the Ga people of West Africa, Accra became the capital of the British Gold Coast in 1877. After Ghana won its independence in 1957, the city became the capital of Republic of Ghana.

A wonderland of natural and architectural beauty, Accra offers outdoor adventures along with fascinating historical buildings, modern shopping and a National Museum well worth a visit.

Start your explorations with the Aburi botanical gardens that meander through the lush Akwapim hills, or wonder at the striking Wli waterfalls whose hills mark the border between Ghana and neighboring Togo. If you're lucky, you might even find yourself in the company of monkeys and rare birds.

For man-made delights visit Osu Castle, also known as Fort Christiansborg, built by the Danes more than 350 years ago. This formidable fortress on a bluff by the sea changed hands from Denmark to Portugal to the British and finally to Ghana, serving as the government seat for most of its existence. Visit the University of Ghana and wander among its charming old trees and botanical gardens. The cafeterias are open to the public and serve traditional Ghanaian dishes so you can eat like a local.

Savvy shoppers find bright fabrics, handbags, shoes and more in the Makola and Kaneshie Markets. For uniquely African pottery and other curios, visit the National Cultural Center (known locally as the "Arts Center").

For dining make your way to Osu, a suburb of Accra known for its vibrant nightlife and collection of restaurants and hotels. The cuisine reflects Accra's colonial past, with French breads and pastries offered side by side with African specialties. You'll also find the Livingstone Safari Restaurant as well as Indian and Chinese options.
